Hu2000 Week 1 Assignment Sugar and Honey: A Critical Thinking Assignment

Directions to complete this assignment:

  1. Read the story, Sugar and Honey.
  2. After reading the short story, answer the questions below in 2 -3 sentences each.

Question : After hearing Phyllis call him “Honey,” Douglas realizes that she is still there with him. What do you think makes him draw this conclusion? Explain.

answer:

After hearing Phyllis call him “Honey “, Douglas draws this conclusion because in the many years they have been together, Phyllis never addressed Douglas by his name when she spoke to him directly, so when she responded by calling him Honey,

Douglas immediately knew that even though the diseases had taken away the person Douglas knew, in a way she was still there with him.

Question : Phyllis always took care of Douglas. He now considers it his duty and privilege to take care of her. Both family members and professionals disagree. Use the Method for Making Decisions (Chapter 1) and describe how these steps apply to Douglas’ decision to take care of Phyllis.

Method for Making Decisions

Step 1:

 Define the decision clearly.

Step 2:

Consider all the possible choices

Step 3:

Gather all relevant information and evaluate the pros and cons and cons of each possible choice.

Step 4:

Select the choice that seems to best meet the needs of the situation.

Step 5:

Implement a plan of action and the monitor the results, making necessary adjustments.

Step 1:

The first step Douglas made was to decide to take care of Phyllis since she was no longer in a position to do it herself

Step 2:

Douglas knew that he was to either take care of his wife himself or she would have been taken to a nursing home where experts were to take care of Phyllis

Step 3:

Taking care of Phyllis meant that she would live in a place she had called home for more than half of her life. Additionally, it told that she would be in tune with her past as they would visit familiar places that Phyllis knew. Moreover, he knew Phillis would disagree with being sent to a nursing home.

Step 4:

The best choice was to take care of Phyllis at home, where she would be in tune with her past and live in her own home.

Step 5:

For Douglas to take care of Phyllis himself at home meant that he had to keep a close eye on her, it meant sleeping very lightly and waking in the middle of the night to ensure Phyllis is still in bed.

Why do you think that Douglas’ family members and doctors do not support his decision to be Phyllis’ caretaker?

Douglas’ family and doctors do not support his decision because they believe as much as Douglas can take care of Phyllis, the nursing home is better at taking care of her, especially in her condition.

The nursing home has experts who will help her through her illness, and it is well equipped to take care of individuals, especially those in Phillis’ state. Additionally, they knew taking care of Phyllis meant a lot of work they might not have wanted to subject to Douglas, primarily because of his age.

Sugar and Honey is the title of the story and the nicknames that Douglas and Phyllis have for each other. Explain the symbolism of the story title.

The symbolism of the story title is to show what the story is about. Sugar and honey are the nicknames Douglas and Phyllis have for each, and the story is based on the two. Thus, the story title symbolizes the story’s central storyline while at the same time referencing the sweet nicknames Douglas and Phyllis had for each other.

Douglas felt very emotional when Phyllis called him by his nickname, something she had done all the years they had been together, and this meant that despite her condition, she was still there.

Hu2000 Week 1 Assignment Sugar and Honey :The Power of Critical Thinking

Hu2000 week 1 assignment sugar and honey

Answer the questions below. Critical thinking is a purposeful and reflective process of making reasoned judgments about what to believe and do.

Provide an example of a time when you engaged in critical thinking to solve a problem or make a decision.

I recently engaged in critical thinking when my group members and I were given a class assignment. My group members and I used critical thinking to find the best way to approach the assignment. We had to make decisions as times who to would complete a particular task and the time of completion of this task.

Explain how critical thinking led to a positive result in the example above. (answer)

Thus, through critical thinking, my group members and I could come up with the best approach to the assignment. Each member was assigned a task accordingly, and we were able to develop solutions about the meet-ups and the time of setting the meeting.

We completed the assignment as required and on time, and we attained a good grade on the assignment.

In approximately 450 B.C., the Greek philosopher stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Explain in your own words what he meant by this statement.

The Greek philosopher meant that unexamined life lacks the purpose of existence and meaning and is therefore not worth living. One of the essential parts of an individual’s life is examining their beliefs and choices by using shrewdness and establishing if these choices and opinions are valid.

Is this statement above still relevant today? Using your own words and ideas, explain why or why not.

The statement is still relevant today because, in today’s world, individuals are laden with various situations from nationalizations and morality erosion in multiple facets of life; thus, in recent times, an individual must dig deeper into their consciousness to find the purpose of their existence and involve themselves in a way that is more meaningful in the society.

Think of an example of a time during the last month when you should have used critical thinking skills but did not.

What was the result?

Early last month, I found myself in a situation where I had to complete four assignments for different units. These assignments were to be completed within the same time frame. Unfortunately, I didn’t use my critical thinking to best manage my time through analyzing and prioritizing which assignment needed my most focus.

Explain how using essential skills of thinking would have changed the result. ( answer)

Using my skills would have helped me in planning my schedule wisely, where I would have critically analyzed these assignments, their urgency, and my understanding of them. This would have assisted in prioritizing the assignments that needed more focus and were urgent and those that didn’t.
